Tico Mounting Pads take the pressure
When prominent German forging company Schmiedetechnik Plettenberg ran into serious problems with the mountings on a new 270 tonne Farina 3150 forging press, James Walker called in the specialists from Tiflex to find the answers.
In addition to the machine's specified vertical dynamic load of 35 tonnes the press was also imposing a horizontal load of 8.5 tonnes. In operation this horizontal loading was causing the entire press to swing sideways by 15mm, making it impossible to control accurate forging of engine and transmission components destined for prestige German car and truck manufacturers.
An immediate solution was required by Schmiedetechnik Plettenberg who now had backlogged orders and needed the machine back in service urgently. After investigation and a site visit by Tiflex technical personnel to determine the exact nature of the problem, a recommendation was put forward to replace the standard mounting pads, supplied when the machine was installed, with 50mm thick pads of Tico® B/PA.
Priority manufacture of replacement Tico B/PA pads was undertaken by Tiflex and the products were rushed to the customer by James Walker Deutschland for immediate fitting.
The solution worked perfectly, entirely solving the problem. From the original swing of 15mm, the movement was reduced to little more than 1 millimetre. The plant engineers at Schmiedetechnik Plettenberg were sufficiently impressed with the result that they intend to replace the mounting pads under four other forging presses with Tico B/PA pads.
